Nurses play an essential role in health care delivery and in leading the transformation of health care. As they have shown throughout the pandemic, their skills are needed more than ever before — at the bedside, in the community, and beyond.
The Foundation has a ten-year history of supporting programs and initiatives to advance the education and professional development of nurses and nurse leaders in various capacities.
The Nursing Internship Program, started by Independence Blue Cross in 2004 and led by the Foundation since 2011, has a history of preparing undergraduate nursing students to deliver culturally competent care to our communities. Despite the challenges of the pandemic, the Foundation welcomed its largest group of student nurse interns virtually in 2020.
Since 2011, the Foundation has awarded more than $13 million for student scholarships and experiential learning through its Nurses for Tomorrow program.
Along with the Foundation’s Nurses for Tomorrow Scholarships that support students who are pursuing undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral nursing degrees, the Foundation is helping to grow the next generation of nurses through its commitment to the Future of Nursing Scholars program and its regional Nurses CanTM campaign to raise the profile of the nursing profession.
In 2020, the Foundation awarded grants totaling $1.1 million to 20 state-accredited nursing programs in Southeastern Pennsylvania that provided educational scholarships for more than 500 future nurse leaders.
